What players learn
Five habits, one deck
The goal is a balanced budget: allocate all your income across priorities A through E so every dollar is accounted for and expenses never exceed income. Along the way, players pick up:
Prioritized spending. Order matters: Giving, then Savings, Essential, Important, and Additional expenses.
Balanced budgeting. Every dollar of income has a job, and expenses can't exceed income.
Reap rewards for sacrifice. You're rewarded for giving and for saving.
Staying debt-free. Not spending more than you have is the only way to win. Taking on consumer debt carries an extra burden.
Be financially responsible. You're in control of telling your money where to go.

How to play Don't Break the Budget

- Shuffle the deck and deal five cards to each player; the rest becomes the draw pile with one card turned up to start the discard pile.
- On your turn, draw two cards, take up to three actions, then discard down to five.
- Build your budget in order: start with Income, then add priorities A through E without exceeding your income.
- “Life Happens” cards create setbacks for opponents; Windfalls and counters help you recover.
- Balance your budget so every dollar is assigned to win the round; win two rounds to win the game.

Meet the creator
Built by someone who cares that everyone can play
Don't Break the Budget was created by Adam Rushforth, who pairs an MBA and a finance background with hands-on experience in blindness training. That's why an accessible braille edition existed from the very beginning, not as an afterthought. The game was tested and refined by his whole family, and shaped with help from the Utah Small Business Development Center. The result is a tool that makes budgeting approachable for everyone at the table.
